5/28/2023 0 Comments Solo by kwame alexanderCharacters also make casual references to attending church as though this is a typical and normal part of their lives. There is the slightest hint of sexual innuendo, but the potential romantic relationships in Blade's life are mostly very chaste, and Joy, a girl he meets in Ghana, even says that the most important basis for any relationship is friendship. The issue of drug addiction is treated tastefully, with an emphasis on the fact that this is a disease against which Blade's father is fighting for his life. Though some of the themes in this book push the envelope a little bit, this is, for the most part, a wholesome read for teens. While in Africa, Blade works through a lot of the issues that have been plaguing him, and begins to figure out that he can't run away from his family. When he suddenly learns that he is adopted, and that Chapel, his girlfriend, has been dating someone else behind his back, Blade is blindsided and devastated, so he flees to Ghana both to escape his personal problems and to locate his birth mother, who has been living among the people of a small Ghanaian village for ten years. While Blade's sister, Storm, is able to remain hopeful in the face of all this adversity, Blade has a more difficult time. Solo by Kwame Alexander with Mary Rand Hess is the story of seventeen-year-old Blade, a musician, whose mother has died, and whose rock star father struggles with addiction.

Leo Grady knew mirages were a thing in the desert, but they’d barely left civilization when the silhouette of his greatest regret comes into focus in the flickering light of the campfire. Frankly, Lily would like to take him out into the wilderness-and leave him there. It pays the bills but doesn’t leave enough to fulfill her dream of buying back the beloved ranch her father sold years ago, and definitely not enough to deal with the sight of the man she once loved walking back into her life with a motley crew of friends ready to hit the trails. But Lily is nothing if not resourceful, and now uses Duke’s coveted hand-drawn maps to guide tourists on fake treasure hunts through the red rock canyons of Utah. The “reigning romance queens” ( PopSugar) and New York Times bestselling authors of The Soulmate Equation and The Unhoneymooners present a charming and laugh-out-loud funny novel filled with adventure, treasure, and, of course, love. I was like “yes! this is it! this is the winning book of the year!” because of the rivals-to-lovers academic setting vibes that I was there for. I wanted this book so bad for the past six months the second I read the description. Anyways, that was a bit unrelated, so let’s hop on over and move on to my review of What’s Not to Love! Over these past two weeks, I’ve read a single book, which is not too great on my reading goal, but it means that I have a book review out for all of you! I’ve been in a bit of a reading slump after starting Crown of Gilded Bones, but not really enjoying the beginning too much, which is honestly so sad because of how many people I’ve seen love the book. There are some flowers blooming though, which I’d say is some good consolation! Hey everyone and happy Tuesday! It is finally May, and my allergies have been absolutely destroying me over these past two weeks hahaha. 5/27/2023 0 Comments Black fortunes by shomari willsMy first book Black Fortunes is the untold story of America's first black millionaires. I thought it would have one good season and then struggle in its sophomore season. I’ll admit I was fearful the show was going to be a one trick pony. I enjoyed the first season far more than I thought I would ever enjoy a Disney Channel Original Series as an adult. I was a little wary about this show getting renewed for a second season. Eventually, Griffin and Harper discover the girl is Harper’s ancestor named Daisy, and Daisy’s mother died and is haunting the Tremont causing problems for Savannah in the 1960s and the Campbells in present day. There are more mysteries surrounding the Tremont Hotel and the Campbell and Dunn families in season 2 of the Disney Channel series, “Secrets of Sulphur Springs.” After Savannah returns with a picture of a girl who looks exactly like Harper, Griffin joins the girls as they travel through time to the 1930s to see if Harper has been time traveling at a different point on the timeline or if it is a family member. |
